Sarah Gunther- Project 1

  1. Hey Sarah- I think the overall composition of this piece is very compelling. It most definitely draws the attention of the viewer, due to the intensity in the contrast of the warm and cool colors. I find myself drawn to it for the simple fact that I want to register what relationship is shared between the objects. Especially since the car takes up such a dominant part of the picture. It becomes a happy balance and i love the use of color.
The only thing I would recommend would be to possibly darken the colors in the car just a little for color blind folk, like me. My eyes have a little trouble registering some of the yellows in the plaid. Other than that.......i like!

  2. I like the plaid on the car, it's an interesting new texture for the usual metal outside. On the windshield, with the bright blue shining through, even though the plaid matches up with the rest of the vehicle, it ends up looking more like some kind of reflection. The plant in the background also has a very nice look to it that I did not notice on the paper. It seems somewhat outlandish like it were some kind of sentient plant from a fantasy with how the color is around it and the way it is inserted into the image (and how it also is reaching out over the car). The background also has a very similar look to it, as though the sky and what's directly below it came from a painting.

Even though I like the plaid on the car, I think that it would have worked even better if the holes for air and the fog lights had been excluded from the plaid treatment, to make it look like the body of the car itself was plaid covered instead of looking kind of like it has a somewhat clear plaid cover wrapped over it. Also the bottom of the bumper could use some cleaning up with how the plaid is over it, there are some jagged white parts that stick through. A few parts of the background are also sticking through with not quite being cut out to the shape of the car in a few areas.

I like on the left side where it suddenly changes to the different background layered over the image, even if it's so sudden it doesn't stand out sorely from the world of the rest of the image. However on the right side it sticks out and kind of bothers me with the curb being diagonal and the background change being horizontal. If it could be erased/masked a bit so that it seems to change on the other side it would look a lot more natural and fit in well like on the left side. And even though I like the change from natural ground to painted / fantasy looking background, I'm curious what it would look like if part of the layer used for the upper part was also over all of the ground under the car. Not a negative, just a curiosity. Maybe a certain part could be copy and pasted down there to see what it does for the image.

I was also curious what the purple coins/disks were in the upper part. In a sense it looks like the plant could have thrown them with it's sentient-looking fantasy-like appearance.

  4. Your project has a striking textural impact with the viewer. The plaid overlaid onto the front of the car is a real attention grabber. The background also has a very textural feeling to it as well. Its texture is a little more subtle, but it seems to resemble the texture of a painting. The plant and three floating purple objects in the top corners go a long way in providing this composition with the necessary amount of balance.

My main concern with this piece is the use of color. There are a lot of colors going on within the piece, and some seem to clash a bit-- especially the blue of the windshield and the plaid design on the car’s body. I also feel the work could benefit from being moved to where it is not so centered. I feel that if the car was just a hair off the page in any direction it would feel more sound and allow the eye to enter the page at a certain point.

  5. Plaid would probably never be my first choice for any texture, however don’t get offended yet, I think that you pulled it off very successfully. The “funness” that is involved with plaid helps to define the car and maybe what the artist, you, think about while your on the road. I was looking at the windshield and I thought I show different shapes in the texture that appear to be behind the windshield, even though they are not really their the viewer can see extra out of this piece. The iconic image of the car offset by the triangle created by the three purple pebbles work well together. The overall surreal feeling given off by the image is effective.

The only issue I have with the piece is that the concrete that the car sits on doesn’t have that same surreal feeling as the rest of the piece has. Good job and congratulations.
