Amanda Johnson Project 1

  1. Your piece makes me smile. I really love the idea behind it. You did a great job with the drawings of the UFOs and the lightning bolts. They give the piece a whole different feel than if you had just placed a picture of them in. It reminds me of something but I cannot think of what that is at the moment.

Another great aspect of your piece is the warm color tones. I’m a huge color fan, and lately orange and yellow tones have been really appealing to me. Your split complimentary with the green monster as the emphasis works really well.

Your perspective also works well. It is very believable that the city and the foreground of the factory go together. I also really love the little robot guy on the bottom left and that he looks human sized. The only suggestion I would have is that I can see the city like shining through the monster, which makes it hard to believe that he is in front of the city.

  2. The colours of the piece of work go well together to create a focus. The yellows and the pinks create a warm atmosphere but are subtle in such a way to let the green monster and the alien space ships become the forefront of the picture. Small details such as the lightning bolts and lines around the monster create a sense of movement and add interest. Even smaller details such as the small robot in the corner adds something that can only be appreciated when close up.
The composition of the piece is set up in such a way so that the monster is the main focus. Though it is the only thing green it is also in the center. Much of the drawn detail is focused around or moving towards the central creature. Though there is quite a bit of negative space the green and focus of the monster is strong to hold one’s attention and then the eye can move to smaller details within the work.
Though very interesting and beautifully done, I feel the idea is a bit unoriginal in a way. For it is much like any mix of monster movie. Then again it is done so interestingly and in such a way to set it apart from anything with in the genres that these images may be part of. I do with there was a bit more working with textures to create more depths with in the piece.

  3. In my opinion the color contrast is working really well in this piece, especially in the printed version which is slightly darker. Also the color transition from top to bottom is fairly smooth. I like that you chose to add some of the pinks and oranges in the foreground to the sky. It appears to be pretty well balanced and my eye is definitely being pulled around the image to see all the little details. The line quality of the sketchy parts is really pleasing and I think the white works well. It gives it just enough contrast to stand out without being distracting.

I'm having a hard time finding things that are not working. The buildings in the background might look a bit better if they were less saturated so that they transition better into the background. The beam coming from the ufo to the left hand side would work better if it was more faded toward the end. I wish the little robot in the corner stood out more.

I love the narrative this image is creating. Its very comical. I feel like its an alien vs alien showdown out in area 51. The squiggles above the monster's head that I'm assuming imply frustration are a nice touch, as are the lines that indicate movement. Its like a cartoon and a claymation film collided and this is a still frame of it.

  4. The colors used in this image flow extremely well. The orange at the top balances the red on the bottom, and prevents the focus from falling off the page with the yellow. The relative perspective is also great and extremely believable. The relative weight of the cityscape to sky is balanced well by the ufo drawings. It's very creative and reminds me of a cartoon movie still. Excellent job creating a sense of movement! My brain is making the assumption that the monster and ufos are actually moving.

I know the intent is probably simplicity, but the piece leaves me wanting something more to look at. Maybe if there was something in the forefront it would give more sense of depth. It's too easy to just keep walking by after first glance because there is only so much to really stop and take in. This would be a piece that would work wonderfully in a series but not as much on its own.
