Amanda Markham Project 1

  1. I think this is a very interesting composition. The color scheme across the work creates a compelling mood and sets a peaceful tone for the piece. The relaxed figures, scenes from nature, and organic textures, coupled with the color unifies the work. I like the window being the main source of light, which gives the sense of a diagonal in the composition. The serene nature of this work sets it apart from the others, and in turn makes for a very creative solution to this project.
I wonder what the composition would look like if it didn't have the blinds in front of the window, or if they had more of a blur on them. I think this would help bring out the figure standing on the cliff more. Also, I recommend playing with shadows around the cliff its self. I think this would bring more attention to the direction of the light coming from the window.

  2. I absolutely love your piece. It is so piece and serene. Yet if you actually look at what’s occurring in the left of the piece it’s anything but. The water looks very scary, and I just noticed the third figure near the bottom of the waterfall who looks like he’s climbing to save his life.

The strongest element to your piece is your use of lighting. It sets the whole mood and distracts from the more violent or harsh subject matter. If your lighting had been darker the piece would be much scarier. The way it is now reminds me of a picture in a storybook.

I really like the figures you’ve placed in the piece too, particularly the two dominate ones of the girl and the boy. They look natural and believable in the space. The only things I would suggest for the piece is to make the female figure more animated and fictional looking like the boy. Also there is something strange that doesn’t fit, like a bottle, near the girl’s foot.

  3. I absolutely adore this. I love that everything seems washed in green. It makes it feel so organic and it is as if I am in a clearing in a forest and the sun is shining through the treetops. The piece is so dramatic with most the space consisting of running water. It creates a lot of bold movement and depth. The tree adds to the feel of being outside and fills up the negative space without taking away from the rocks and waterfall, which seems to be the main focus of the piece. I like that the blinds are so large and dramatic in the background but is also the obvious source of light that seems to reflect well in the piece. I think the technical work was executed well and everything fits well.
The one thing that could be worked on is the edge of the rocks that are in the middle of the image and meet with the rest of the background. I feel that the edges are so rugged and create such a contrast that it is the only thing that makes it feels like it doesn’t fit. The rest of the image is so soft in comparison, even with the edges of the blinds as they are a much softer colour. I think it is an amazing idea that was executed well and it is just lovely.

  4. This has a very nice composition. The colors are really well unified and the lines/implied lines lead my eye around the image, enticing me to check out every little detail. For the most part the light direction is working. It has a nice range of values and the neutral tones really work well.
The tree needs to be tinkered with a bit. The tree is the one place the directional lighting isn’t making sense. Also because it is further back in the composition it should be a bit more blurry to better imply a sense of depth. Other than that just clean up some edges here and there.
Conceptually I love this piece. The fantasy-like scene is really great and the lighting helps that. It’s a world within a world. Makes you wonder where this is, who are the people and what is going to happen next.
