Andrew Barnes Project 1

  1. I like that you tackled realism in your piece because I think that it can be more difficult to achieve that than making an abstract piece. I also like the content, but I'm also biased because I love art that deals with Charlotte imagery. I like the overlay of the buildings in the background because it gives the piece a more grandiose feel than if they were not there. The traffic lights add a nice diagonal line, and I think that the geometric negative space created in the top of the piece is interesting. I also like the repetition of the street lamps with the traffic lights on them, especially how if you look closely, you can tell that they are from the same image. It was done well and is very subtle.

I think that the composition could be stronger. Maybe it's the nature of the photographs, but I feel like there is too much going on in the bottom of the photo. I also think that the black edge on the left is distracting and takes away from the image, and I would prefer that it be cropped rather than be there. Also, where the second image was placed on top, there is a hard, obvious line in the bottom left corner. And while I like that this image was mostly realistic, I think that the image would be more interesting if it was just manipulated slightly more.

  2. Line is a probably one of your strongest compositional elements since you chose to work with a cityscape. I like your use of the traffic light, which goes against the rest of the lines. Also, because there is so much line in your piece, seeing the more rounded mirror at the bottom adds interest to the composition, and so do the swirls reflected on the building. I appreciate the tilt of the building on the far left side.

Looking at your image for the first time, I had to stare a while longer to find the photoshopped elements. Because you kept with city theme in all your pictures, it was difficult was to tell what was photoshopped and what wasn't. I think you could have played with the blending modes a bit. I think you could have challenged yourself a little more just by doing that. I appreciate the foggy look of the background, but at the same time, I'm not entirely convinced because some sections which I would think would be foggy aren't (ie: the image on the top right). I don't know if that was intentional, but to me it looked like you just accidentally didn't fade those areas. Not sure.

Overall, I think you could have taken more "risks" with the photoshop tools, but I do appreciate your realistic take on the assignment.

  3. I like how this image has the ability to be a realistic photograph. The background has the quality of an overexposed negative, which creates the allusion of even greater depth. Cityscapes in general have lots of angles, lines, and depth and an overall feel of being very small in comparison. I appreciate that you allowed the natural elements to combine with the synthetic. Most cities have a lack of foliage that I think is sad and therefore your tree in the front makes me feel a little lonely. I like how the angles of the two images are off and it gives a sense of being off balance.
I wish the images were a little sharper. There doesn’t seem to be a really sharp focal point, but then again in cities it’s hard to focus on just one thing. I found the mirror in the bottom to be a bit of a distraction but overall I think it’s a good piece.

  4. To me this is the most realistic, matter of factual piece. But It's really refreshing to see this. I like how it looks like there's only about 3 images max, and they're repeated really well all over. The thing that captures my eye the are the shadowed buildings in the background. The one building that's under construction has a great texture. If those weren't in the background it would look too much just like a photograph of a skyline. You did a great job with repeating and moving this images around...like the street light. I love how there's another one off to the side...also It's funny that it's S. Caldwell...I'm on the street all the time, haha. I also like the viewpoint. We can tell you're in your car due to the side mirror in the foreground.
The one thing that bothers my eye when i zoom in is the heavy amount of grain all over the place. It could be a little bit more crisp. Also, I don't know if you didn't want to have any kind of sky in the background, but it would have been nice to see some type of sky. I also think there could have been a bit more saturated color to make it pop out some more since there's not much color.
