Ben Hurst Project 1

  1. Ben- I think this is a very strong and evocative image, full of content that causes the viewer to question the story behind this piece. I like the way the surrounding figures are ghosted in. The one on the right seems a bit more transparent though. I'm not sure if this was intentional or not. But regardless, it looks great and flows well with the overall piece. Its almost as if the figures around the one receiving the gun are looking on in disappointment. I also enjoy the abstraction of the film cells surrounding the figures faces.
I honestly don't know enough about photoshop to make a practical critique of the image. The only thing I might suggest is that perhaps in the future, you could apply just a bit more contrast in the image. I understand that the figure in the center is the focal point of the image being the brightest part of the picture, but at the same time a certain counterbalance on either side of the subject couldn't hurt. Perhaps by adding just a few more people with some lighter tones. But overall, very impressive.

  2. This image conveys a very strong emotional sensations to the viewer. it creates numerous outcomes and stories to go through their head, and wondering what happen or perhaps what will happen next. I enjoy the black and white contrast, and the ghosting/transparency of the people, which could even be assumed that perhaps that person is dead? The black frames remind of a movie screen and the images can stat playing in your head as to what perhaps happened.
The main thing i would change is the blood on the hand. I pretty sure you had meant to emphasis this, but it looks to unrealistic. I would dim down the color a little bit to do with the rest of the image. I would make it black and white image though, the blood on the hand really gives great emphasis. Also the gun looks a little out of place. It looks a little odd to me in the hand that is giving the gun, sort of like its floating. That perhaps is because of the bright red blood.
Overall i am intrigued, and interested. The contrast is great.

  3. I really enjoy what you’ve done here. The black and white composition really lends itself to the darker, emotional, tone I believe you’re trying to convey. The three figures create a very balanced composition as well. I like the small use of the color red to put emphasis on the part of the page. The use of film slide/stills(?) is also striking and invokes good questions in the viewer’s mind. The fading aspect of the figures is intriguing. This is a very strong image.

I would really like to see the small splash of color used even more within this piece. If some red was also splattered elsewhere in the design, perhaps in a corner or two, I feel like it would add a lot of life to the piece. Another color or two being incorporated, not just red, could also be interesting. I also feel that if the film slide things were a bit more subtle it could also improve the quality and imagery in the work.

  4. I very much like the choice of color (or well, the lack of) in this image. It sets a very somber tone to it, and the color bits that are in add a nice touch. I also agree with the comment about darkening the image some, I believe I remember the print out to be darker, and the comment I wrote on my paper about it at the time was I really liked the shadows and the darkness in it.

Though also on first look I was confused about the presence of the film slides... But looking at it again now they seem to be emphasizing the subjects of the image. I believe less opacity on each to make them less apparent would be a good improvement to the image. Overall though I like the image and can't think of many other changes to suggest for it. The brightness of the red doesn't bother me as it looks more of a choice of style and emphasis rather than realism, and I like the results.
