Nicole Anderson Project 1

  1. I think the strongest element of composition in your piece is the movement. My eyes start at the top right and then follow the movement of the lines and the pink-hand-puppet-looking things to the bottom of the page. I like that you added the road sign with the arrow pointing back up, which directs your eyes back up to the top right. You did a good job of cutting around your images as well.

Overall, I like your piece. The lightened background brings focus to the bold-colored objects, which I like. The only thing I noticed when I zoomed into the picture is how the background up at the top and again towards the middle, have a sharp cut in it. I don't know if that was intentional or not, but I would probably just suggest maybe blending it to make it look like one. That's really all I would suggest though.

    Good work.

  2. I really like the way you created this image. It basically has all of the elements she was stressing about composition. The most compelling of them, to me, are your choice of placement and the amount of movement. The image can be read either moving upward or downward and either way works well, but after noticing the sign I realize the direction is meant as upward. I also like the color choices. The light colors in the background really enhance the depth and motion of the main images. The brown neutral colors do two things for me. They add to the color palette and help pop the vibrant pinks. It also works really well as a form of line for the direction of the piece.
I don’t really see much weakness. Maybe the sign could have something more but it doesn’t bother me the way it is. I almost want to see more of the lime green, but not really because that would take away from the depth perception and light source. Maybe you could try blending the fabric folds. There are definite breaks in it but once again it doesn’t bother me. Overall I think it’s very affective.

  3. I was immediately attracted to the colors and textures and the overall layout of this piece. It has a different movement than any of the other pieces and it was kind of refreshing and natural feeling. I feel like the bottom part where it gets darker catches my eye the most, then it moves up and gets lighter towards the top. Even though there wasn't supposed to be text, I like the South Charlotte sign because I feel like that says something about you, where you're from or something..not sure. It works out too that the arrow is point upward where the artwork is moving and flowing away. The contrast between the background textures and the dominant pink and brown figures blends together nicely. It was also cool to see that you did some hand drawing in there...I'm still nervous to do that.
The only thing that isnt working for me is the blurriness and the white outline of the road sign on the bottom. It is hard to make an image that is already blurry not blurry but when I get up close that's the one thing that distracts my eyes. Also, I think it would like nice if there were some sort of texture in the thicker brown stripes, like the more shaky brown lines. Although, there's so much texture already that that contrast of a thick line is kind of neat.

  4. The strongest elements in your piece is definitely line and movement. I immediately follow the dresses from the upper right hand side to the darker area in the bottom lefthand corner, but then the road sign shows me the beautiful (and almost hidden) lines in the bottom right hand corner.

I like that there is a slight gradiation on the dresses from lighter to darker, but I think that you could increase that distinction from the first one in the top right to the last one in the bottom left. I'm a little undecided on whether I like such a bold pink against the subdued background, but I think it's growing on me.
